Backrooms hits it big at the domestic box office
Kane Parsons is not the traditional household name, but his film and by extension his web series, Backrooms, is a huge hit at the domestic box office. It’s even become the highest-grossing A24 flick domestically.
Right at the cusp of surpassing $100 million domestically, Parsons yellow-tinged horror, which already holds A24’s highest-grossing opening record and more likely on the way. Additionally, Backrooms has made him the youngest filmmaker to top domestic charts at just 20. The film is still raking in the cash, so odds are the film will surpass that milestone here soon before the week is up or early next week, as it still has some time in the theaters.
Theatrically, Parsons’ project is a hit, but even more so, it’s a hit on YouTube, having started as a small web series before its following exploded enough for A24 to pick it up and adapt into a feature film under the watchful eye of the series’ creator.
It seems content creators are having some sort of renaissance in the Hollywood scene. Backrooms is just another instance — just a few weeks ago, Curry Barker wowed audiences with Obsession, which actually saw theatergoers increase two and three weeks after its debut. Meanwhile, you’ve had Markiplier’s Iron Lung, which just hit YouTube as a film you can purchase.
