The Office is too “politically incorrect” to be made nowadays

Actor Rainn Wilson, who played Dwight Schrute in The Office, has made his stance on if the series could be made today. In the end, it couldn’t largely due to political incorrectness and cancel culture stifling modern comedy.

Talking to Fox News, Wilson explained by using his character and Michael Scott — played by Steve Carell — as examples of walking political incorrectness. The characters were both made lack self-awareness, but even if they were meant to play into that, modern audiences simply wouldn’t be able to jive with a character in a new show who lacks such awareness.

“We milked that for a lot of great, really inappropriate stuff. But even with the fact that painting that character as just an idiot, I don’t think you could get away with it today.”

The Office is among the most beloved shows out there, at least pre-Will Ferrell days. While the show has come to an end back in 2013, it remains a staple in not just sitcoms but television in general. It frequents tops charts around the best shows and even its YouTube channel, which uploads clips, routinely gets pretty healthy views for the show’s age, but Wilson probably has a point that it just wouldn’t have the same lasting power if it were made nowadays.
