In the late 1920s, Walt Disney had Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, but he never actually got the legal paperwork done to make sure no one else could use him. So, when Universal had taken control of the character, Disney ended up using it as a learning experience and created the much-beloved anthro mouse, Mickey Mouse. In 2006, the rabbit would return to the House of Mouse, but it wouldn’t be until 2019 when Disney would announce development of a show — Oswald — spearheaded by Jon Favreau. Now, though, we know who is in charge of its animation.
It turns out, Disney is outsourcing the work to Sergio Pablos’ SPA Studios, best known for their traditionally animated Netflix animated Christmas film, Klaus. A video was shared of Faverau’s press tour of The Mandalorian and Grogu. Changing topics a bit, he also pointed out this new Oswald series’ animation is being handled by SPA.
Beyond that little tidbit, not much else is really known in terms of its story. We know the series will be a blend of animation and live action, with Star Wars: Skeleton Crew‘s Ravi Cabot-Conyers set to star alongside Ryder Allen, Mykal-Michelle Harris, Amy Sedaris, and more.
At this time, there isn’t a clear release date just yet.
