Blue Beetle beats out Barbie at the box office

Things are looking up for Blue Beetle. Despite a lackluster marketing campaign with some blunders, a niche audience, and two previous box office flops, it seems this modestly budget hero flick has at least one thing going for it.

As reported by IGN, the Ángel Manuel Soto-led hero film has bested Barbie in what would’ve been the pastel picture’s fourth week topping the box office charts. That’s not to say that Barbie’s luster is going away — it’s still a billion-dollar baby that continues to excel as it enters its fifth weekend. In the end, all that happened was the hero flick moved Greta Gerwig’s toy movie down to second place.

Blue Beetle was poised to utterly flop, and while it certainly hasn’t gotten as much traffic to theaters as hoped, falling short of Shazam! Fury of the Gods‘ $30.1 million it still has a lot of time in theaters, and with as much press and raving reviews as it’s getting, we can’t imagine it won’t catch up a bit more. It’s even been hyped up by DC superstar Zack Snyder alongside a battalion of fans who came to the aid of star Xolo Maridueña, who was forced to sit out the press junket as part of the SAG-AFTRA strike.

It helps that DC Studios fostered a rather low budget of $100 million — before marketing — so we can expect that, if anything, it can at least recoup those costs as it currently sits at $43.4 million with raving reviews from critics and fans alike.
