Warner Bros. in talks with Rick and Morty director to helm film adaptation
Debuting in 2013, it was only a matter of time before Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty would take the leap onto the big screen. The series has spawned a huge following, earned awards, and even has a spin-off — President Curtis — poised to release on the network this year.
Plot details, per THR, are still held closely to their chest, but the flick will be helmed by Jacob Hair, who has been the director behind episodes of the show since 2019 as its supervising director. Now, the idea of the series taking itself to the big screen isn’t too shocking, as series co-creator, Dan Harmon, had previously said back in 2023 that he had spoken with Zack Snyder about the potential of Warner Bros. making a film.
At the time, Harmon had basically said they’d “spend a bunch of extra money” and “make it 90 minutes long” while keeping the tone of the show intact.
“My philosophy would be to just take a Rick and Morty adventure, and spend a bunch of extra money on it and make it 90 minutes long. Not to try to earn its feature status by virtue of canonical dramatic tone shifts or anything like that, but rather to just make it a super badass episode of Rick and Morty.”
What is Rick and Morty?
In case you’re out of the know, somehow, Rick and Morty is an Adult Swim adult animated comedy drama about the adventures of Rick Sanchez, an cynical mad scientist, and his grandson, Morty Smith. The duo go on wild adventures involving interdenominational hopping, space travel, and familial bonding of the weird sort.
Rick and Morty was created by Harmon and the disgraced Justin Roiland, who hasn’t been involved in the show since 2023 following an investigation into his abuse of power to sleep with underage girls and young women.
The show has been Adult Swim’s top series for some time, leading it to be renewed up until at least Season 12. Season 9 debuts this Sunday.
