Abbott Elementary creator sets sights on Betty Boop movie
Mockumentary Abbot Elementary creator and star, Quinta Brunson, is eyeing the big screen as she sets sights on creating a Betty Boop movie where she develop and star. The flick is in production at Fifth Chance Productions with Mark Fleischer, the grandson of Max Fleischer, alongside Fleischer Studios tied, as well.
Reported by Variety, the film will mark the character’s first starring appearance since the 1930s. The outlet is asserting this could be another Barbie situation — “a formidable female creator-star reimagining a nearly century-old female character through a contemporary lens.”
Brunson describes Betty Boop as impactful yet remains “pleasantly niche” and after meeting with the younger Fleischer, they knew they had to make a movie diving into the origins and evolution of the character.
“Betty Boop is one of our nation’s most beloved cartoon characters, yet somehow still remains pleasantly niche. She has had a quiet but undeniable impact on culture for nearly a century. After Erin and I met with Mark and learned more about his grandfather’s creation of Betty, I realized there was a much deeper story to tell. One that could be explored in a way that feels refreshing, subversive, and timeless, much like Betty herself.”
