Netflix’s new fairy tale adaptation, Steps, finds its Fairy Godmother

Netflix has a slurry of projects in the pipeline, but perhaps this one is the most magical. Steps, directed by Alyce Tzue and John Ripa, has tapped Hocus Pocus star Bette Midler to play the role of the Fairy Godmother.

Tudum reports of the casting, with Midler describing this iteration of the Fairy Godmother as a “a little bit of a bumbler” and a “bit of a schemer.” Regardless, the actress is thrilled to be part of the film.

“The beloved Fairy Godmother, the wholesome Fairy Godmother — the one with all the good intentions — has been around for a long, long time. This particular version of the Fairy Godmother has good intentions, but she’s a little bit of a bumbler, and she’s a little bit of a schemer. I’m thrilled to be part of this film! And I’m thrilled to be with this cast!”

Steps follows Lilith, one of Cinderella’s stepsisters seeking a way out of her shadow by stealing the Fairy Godmother’s wand, hijacking the ball with her fellow sister, Margot. This, however, ends up leading to an evil presence — Priscilla — swooping in and taking hold of the throne.

Left with no other choice, Lilith has to team up with Cinderella to escape the Screaming Woods and fend off biker trolls and henchmen.

Beyond Midler, the film stars Ali Wong, Stephanie Hsu, and Amanda Seyfried as Lilith, Margot, and Cinderella respectively. Meanwhile, producer roles have gone to Amy Poehler, Jane Hartwell, and Kim Lessing.

Currently, Steps doesn’t have any sort of release date beyond releasing this year to Netflix.
