Project Hail Mary sets sights on MGM+ before Prime Video
After wrapping up a 90-day theater venture, Amazon MGM Studios’ Project Hail Mary snagged over $680 million worldwide, but it’s about to expand its reach as it preps for a streaming home. Obviously, as this is an Amazon MGM production, it’s bound to head to either MGM+ or Amazon Prime… or both.
As reported by Deadline, though, Project Hail Mary will be time-exclusive on MGM+, as apparently “different movies in the Amazon MGM verse go through different greenlight models,” with PHM apparently fitting the bill for going to MGM+ first. The bottom line is while they’ve got a joint venture, movies handled by Prime are different to those handled by MGM, both with different budgets and monetization models internally.
Now, Prime movies can appear in theaters, Red One, is such an example, it all matters if they think it can raise interest and recoup its budget within a theatrical run, if it can’t then it’s likely to Prime Video if it’s still greenlit. Additionally, it’s not like it won’t go to Prime, either, as it will go to both, but it goes to MGM+ first with an undisclosed date for Prime Video.
