Lionsgate taps A Minecraft Movie, Dumb Money writers for new Monopoly film
Sometime back, following the immense success of Margot Robbie-led Barbie, Hasbro began looking at making more movies. One such film in the works was a Monopoly movie at Lionsgate, who just purchased eOne from Hasbro. Said movie seems to be starting to move forward as two duos — Neil Widener and Gavin James and Rebecca Angelo and Lauren Schuker Blum — have all been tapped to flesh out the idea for such a film.
Deadline reports the film, which is still in its early days, if it wasn’t obvious from the fact the two duos are there to flesh the idea out. The former two handled A Minecraft Movie while the latter two tackled Dumb Money. Lionsgate is said to make their decision on which outline to go for and then the process will go from there. This isn’t the first time the board game has tried its hand at the big screen, but the attempts have fallen on deaf ears. Robbie’s LuckyChap, on the heels of Barbie‘s success, was also pulled into this board game adaptation.
The history of a Monopoly heading to the big screen spans quite a while, starting back in 2008 at Universal during the time they were producing movies based on board games, but the flop that was 2012’s Battleship sunk their drive to actually move forward with talks about more adaptations.
Frankly, the idea of a Monopoly movie both intrigues and confuses us. It’s basically a landlord — and friendship ender — simulator. The concept of adapting it into a film would be interesting, but the whole plot of it is really up in the air, as would how they could adapt it in such a way that it’s clear that this is Monopoly.
