Netflix picks up new Michael Jackson docuseries exploring infamous trial
Netflix has picked up a new three-part docuseries set to explore the infamous Michael Jackson child sexual abuse case from the early 2000s. Dubbed Michael Jackson: The Verdict, the series is directed by Nick Green and executive produced by Fiona Stourton.
Green asserts now is the time to dive deeper into the courtroom aspect of the trial, as no cameras were allowed, per Tudum. They also feel like it’s important for anyone interested in what happened within the courtroom to “feel closer to what happened.”
“It has been 20 years since the trial of Michael Jackson in which he was found not guilty. Yet, to this day, controversy still rages. No cameras were allowed in court, and so the public’s view of the facts at the time were filtered by commentators and presented piecemeal. It was time to take a forensic look at the trial as a whole.
Anyone interested in the Michael Jackson story should feel this documentary gives them a window into what was largely a closed event and a chance to feel closer to what happened.”
The series interviews jurors and media professionals who were observing the trial take place.
Michael Jackson: The Verdict comes after the monolithic success of Michael, the controversial documentary starring real-life nephew, Jaafar Jackson, that dethroned Bohemian Rhapsody as the highest-grossing music biopic. In it, it focused primarily on the rocky relationship between Michael and his father, ending before the child abuse accusations boiled to the surface, partly due to legal issues.
Lionsgate executive Adam Fogelson, seems confident for there to be another movie or even two or three more. He even notes potential for the film to tackle the accusations, though, that’s up to the crew behind it.
