Michael 2 is on the table

Michael has become a huge success commercially. While critics blast it, fans are eating it up to the tune of over $217 million worldwide in just the few days that it’s been in theaters. So, the bigger question people have is… will there be a sequel? Well, it seems we’ve got an answer as a film exec has come forward kicking around the idea.

In case you don’t know, Michael hit theaters over the weekend and secured its spot as the best opening for any biopic, previously held by Oppenheimer, which in and of itself we’re pretty sure was a lightning in the bottle moment as its success was definitely fueled by the internet tying it with Margot Robbie’s Barbie. Without that, it had to stand on its own, which certainly has. But, a sequel could be on the table, according to Business Insider, who spoke with Lionsgate Motion Picture Group’s Adam Fogelson.

The film exec directly claims there’s “at least one more” movie and that he’s speaking not as a Lionsgate employee, but as a person within the film industry. He also notes later that a sequel could include scenes dashed from the final cut.

“Look, there’s at least one more movie. Just speaking less as an employee of Lionsgate and more as a person who has spent a lot of time in the movie business, I was always excited by the possibility that you could make a more complete and satisfying telling of Michael’s story if you weren’t confined to only one movie.”

What could Michael 2 include?

In case you’re wondering, Michael included scenes involving police raiding Neverland Ranch in search for evidence of child abuse allegations sent Michael Jackson’s way. The film scrapped those scenes due to a legal issue surrounding a settlement clause barring one of the victims being depicted in the flick.

The clause led to mandatory reshoots and a new ending for the Jaafar Jackson starring biopic. If a sequel wasn’t enough, either, Fogelson went as far as saying there could be as many as four films in what would turn into a massive saga, with at least one possibly covering his downfall if the crew — producer Graham King, director Antione Fuqua, and writer John Logan — decide to.
