Michael takes center stage once again at box office

By Gabriel Stanford-Reisinger
May 17, 2026

The documentary that has been a hit with audiences, Michael, has once again reclaimed its spot at the top of the box office food chain following a release to IMAX. The film has since found great success, not only surpassing over $600 million worldwide, but also beating out Bohemian Rhapsody for the highest-grossing music doc of all-time, though, that’s not adjusted for inflation.

Frankly, it’s probably because the hit films coming out right now aren’t hitting the greatest numbers. While The Devil Wears Prada 2 isn’t out of theaters, and was the film to dethrone the King of Pop’s controversial doc in the first place, it’s probably not gonna find another wave of immense success to dethrone Michael again.

Sure, you could point to Mortal Kombat II, which was frankly a fair bit better than the franchise’s previous mainline outing, but even so, it isn’t a film “breaking molds.”

Michael spotlights the highs of the popstar’s career, with the leading role handed to Michael Jackson nephew Jaafar Jackson. While Lionsgate is facing a bit of trouble from actress Nia Long, a sequel — and potentially more — is all-but assured with this sort of success.
