Mortal Kombat II is not hitting good numbers internationally

Mortal Kombat II proved to be a modest success, even marking itself as the most well-received flick in the MK lineup. The film, which is in the midst of its opening weekend, has seemingly failed to capture an international audience so far.

Deadline reports on its start, as it sat third behind both Disney’s The Devil Wears Prada 2 and the late week of Lionsgate’s Michael. Worldwide so far, based on Box Office Mojo stats, early numbers aren’t too good for MK II, with its international numbers only showing $8.9 million with a debut date of $17 million domestically. This rounds out to $25.9 million, which isn’t the worst, but perhaps New Line Cinema and Warner Bros.’ decision to move up the video game adaptation wasn’t the best move after all.

Yeah, in case you didn’t know, WB had planned the adaptation to release on May 15. This probably would’ve made it stand out more and have a chance at capturing more attention. Instead, they have to duke it out with The Devil Wears Prada sequel and the music biopic Michael. The real test to this film’s lasting power will be next week.

Simon McQuoid returns to the director’s chair following his contribution to the 2021 flick for Mortal Kombat II while Karl Urban takes the role of Johnny Cage. Todd Garner, James Wan, Toby Emmerich, E. Bennett Walsh, and McQuoid are all producers while Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Slater, and Lawrence Kasanoff take the role of executive producers.
