Lionsgate exec “very, very confident” Michael 2 will appeal to global audience
Lionsgate is going all-in on Michael. Currently, its box office stands at $700 million worldwide, with $291 million domestically, comfortably ahead of the domestic earnings of Rami Malek-led Bohemian Rhapsody, Michael 2 is poised to explore more of the late pop star’s life, potentially even the allegations.
Lionsgate Studios Motion Picture’s Adam Fogelson, after confirming the doc could find a sequel, shared that he’s excited about the progress being made and that they’re “very, very confident” that it will entertain and appeal to a global audience like its precursor. Admittedly, he does dodge if Michael 2 will tackle the infamous child exploitation charges, but that shouldn’t come as a surprise.
“We can go forwards and backwards in telling this story. There are so many other events that happened, even in the time frame of the original movie, that weren’t touched upon. So we’re very, very confident that we’ve got an incredibly entertaining movie that will appeal once again to a global audience as the pieces come together.”
Michael stars real-life nephew, Jaafar Jackson, spotlighting the tumultuous relationship between Michael Jackson and his father. The film ends at during the Bad Tour, so much of the controversy is left out in the cold. Alongside Jaafar, Colman Domingo and Nia Long star in the flick.
With the lack of discussion surrounding the actor’s alleged misdeeds, it has led to Netflix greenlighting their own docuseries spotlighting what happened in the courtroom of the infamous, no cameras trial.
