Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie has undoubtedly been brandished as a success. From a stellar opening weekend to now an impressive second consecutive weekend, Mattel’s toy brand has become a film sensation this year with a whopping 127 million overseas and worldwide with no signs of stopping now.
As Collider reports, Barbie, which stars Suicide Squad’s Margot Robbie, has surpassed Joker, making it the highest-grossing second weekend for an internationally released Warner Bros. movie. Worldwide, it’s eyeing an even bigger number — $800 million. Currently, it stands at $780.7 million.
In the international market, the film has seen immense growth across countries such as Taiwan, Germany, and Hong Kong, with others seeing a noticeable but not as impressive boost. In contrast, China and Australia have seen a slight dip, but overall the film’s popularity hasn’t waned in other parts of the world.
It’s only been in theaters for 11 days, and it’s already the third-biggest movie worldwide of the year, only behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which firmly sits at the number one spot.
No doubt, the success of Gerwig’s Robbie-led Barbie is going to carry much of Mattel’s upcoming films based on their iconic toy brands like Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, Polly Pocket, and Hot Wheels, which we expect would be the closest movie to reach a success level close to Barbie.
