French chef that inspired Ratatouille is getting a biopic

French chef Bernard Loiseau may not immediately ring a bell to the everyman — especially outside of France — but Auguste Gusteau may help jog your memory. The French chef, who tragically took his own life in 2007, was cited as a massive inspiration to the fictional “anyone can cook” touting Michelin star-studded cook found in Pixar’s Ratatouille.

Well, perhaps you’ll be able to dig deeper as Paris-based Chi-Fou-Mi Productions takes on the task of making a biopic around the man himself, according to THR. Spearheading the picture is Thomas Lilti, who is mostly known for working with medical professionals.

Loiseau’s cause of death was widely speculated by media at the time, with claims of depression spurred on by mounting debt and unsubstantiated rumors that his world-renowned La Côte d’Or restaurant, which now goes by Le Relais Bernard Loiseau, was gonna lose one of its three Michelin stars.

Pivoting towards Ratatouille, Gusteau, who is similarly seen as this visionary chef “dies of a broken heart” following a visit from food critic Anton Ego who drug his reputation into the mud so much that it led to a downward spiral to the point of his spot losing one of his stars.
