Barbie is now the highest-grossing movie in North America

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has seen a lot of attention from the second that it hit theaters, and now it takes the top spot as the highest-grossing movie in North America. The pastel pink picture‘s star, Margot Robbie, knew it could reach stardom at the box office, promising it would hit $1 billion. Even though she thought she was hyping it up beyond what it would actually make, she was right on the money… and then some.

Barbie surpassed The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s domestic earnings. This isn’t too shocking as the flick has seen continued growth thanks largely to the film’s widespread ads, word of mouth, and the happenstance meme it was tied into with Oppenheimer. It’s even surpassed The Dark Knight, making it the highest-grossing Warner Bros. movie out there.

If reports are true, it’ll get an even bigger audience as it should hit Max in early September. This will surely give it some more eyes on it.

Some are concerned for the future of Mattel’s library of toy films in the works. Randall Park is concerned the suits at Mattel Films and WB are going to think it’s exclusively because it’s based on a toy, but it was actually a success because it was a film about and by women. Meanwhile, Early Reel’s editor-in-chief worries the companies are going to have too high of expectations for the next toy-based film, looking back at the giant success that is Barbie to compare to whatever movie is next.
