Popeye slasher sequel, Popeye the Slayer Man 2, officially underway

Public domain figures often see slasher or horror adaptations by small-time filmmakers — you’ve got the likes of Winnie the Pooh, who is public domain and has a whole series of horror films under the Blood & Honey branding, you’ve got a number of Steamboat Willie-inspired films, and yes, even one starring the iconic seaman himself, Popeye, with a handful, including Popeye the Slayer Man. Well, now there’s gonna be a sequel.

Popeye the Slayer Man 2 is directed by Robert Michael Ryan, akin to its predecessor, with Jeff Miller in the producer’s chair. According to Deadline, fans of the original won’t be disappointed, as Miller promises it’ll be “bigger and bloodier than the first.”

“This movie is bigger and bloodier than the first. More kills and gore and more Popeye backstory. Fans of the original won’t be disappointed, and we believe we’ll get new fans with this one.”

In terms of cast, Sean Michael Conway, Elena Juliano, Sarah Nicklin, Nathan Todaro, and Jason Stephens reunite in the film while Daniel Baldwin and Avaryana Rose make their debut in the — what is now — a duology. Now, the film isn’t quite close to being done, with filming just starting in upstate New York

Directed by Ryan, the 2025 slasher flick sees a couple drug dealers in pursuit of a woman who stole cocaine from them… yes really. They end up in an abandoned and haunted cannery. Another group end up in the factory to film a documentary around what’s been dubbed “Sailor Man.”

The story behind Popeye the Slayer Man 2 is still under wraps.
