Sony’s new Karate Kid film is getting delayed amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, forcing it to miss its release window next year. The movie planned on releasing on the original film’s anniversary, but the strikes have dampers the plan.
Instead of releasing on June 7, the movie will take a tremendous delay to release solo on December 13, 2024. It won’t have super steep competition that week, though. Following it up on December 20, we have movies like Thunderbolts and Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
A new entry to the Karate Kid franchise was a no-brainer after the immense success of Cobra Kai, the YouTube Red-turned-Netflix Original show that ends with the upcoming sixth season. There was also the vastly less loved 2010 reboot starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan. But, it’s more safe to say they want you to look away from the blemish on its well-established record.
It should be noted that a lot of the film’s finer details are still under wraps — we still have no idea what the story is. It’s possible this could be a prequel entry with a focus on Mr. Miyagi, considering Daniel LaRusso actor Ralph Macchio expressed interest in such a film, but if that’s the play for the future film, it would mean that he’d have to sit this one out.
