Here’s why Michael used CGI for Bubbles

Eagle-eyed fans may notice Bubbles looks off. This isn’t too shocking, as rather than using a real chimp to portray Michael Jackson’s beloved pet, director Antoine Fuqua opted instead to use CGI. Some may question why, but really, it all circles back to proper care of animals. The biopic isn’t meant to glorify keeping chimps as pets, after all.

In a statement to Variety, distributor Lionsgate explained that the portrayal is based on fact and not meant to act as endorsement. This is why PETA was in the room to keep things “ethical,” or at least as ethical as PETA knows how to be. While the CGI Bubbles was used for the flick, the real one continues to live a “peaceful life” at the Center for Great Apes in Florida.

“We have had continuing constructive dialogue with PETA about the portrayal of Bubbles the chimpanzee as a pet. This portrayal is simply based on historical fact and is not intended to be an endorsement of keeping chimpanzees as pets. Bubbles is portrayed in the movie using CGI technology and the real Bubbles has been living a peaceful life at the Center for Great Apes sanctuary for more than 20 years.”

Michael, despite glossing over all the awful things he’s been accused of in favor of more of an “origin story” sort of biopic, has wowed audiences while critics grumble. While Paris, Michael’s daughter, isn’t a fan, Taj, his nephew remains a staunch supporter of his uncle and the musical influence he left behind when he overdosed.

For those interested, Michael is in theaters now.
