Disney’s Haunted Mansion isn’t having the best time at the box office on its opening weekend. This could be because of Barbenheimer, as both films continue to climb the financial ladder, unintentionally leaving some films in the dust, but that’s just speculation.
Box Office Mojo indicates Justin Simien’s horror comedy has only fostered a measly nine million at the box office during its opening weekend. If it keeps the course of its current profit, it won’t likely meet the production costs of $150 million. Of course, it could pull an Elemental, which became profitable after a mediocre opening weekend. However, we’d expect it to be more like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which broke even in production costs near the end of its theatrical release.
Again, this is mere speculation, and we’d like — for the sake of the Haunted Mansion team — to be proven wrong. Simien appears pretty passionate about the franchise, to the point he believes there’s room for a sequel or even spin-offs.
It’s hard to say how Disney will handle the middling theatrical release should it continue to underperform. Barbie and Oppenheimer have been exceptions to the recent trend of movies seeing a not-so-great theatrical release and missing projected amounts.
Haunted Mansion is in theaters now.
