Barbie’s Allan could’ve been played by someone else

While much of the crew behind Mattel Films’ debut film, Barbie, has shared how much they adored working on the film, there was a chance that Allan would’ve been played by another actor. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World star Michael Cera did end up taking the role, but not before his agent preemptively made a decision.

In an interview with GQ, the actor spoke about how he ended up in the star-studded cast. It wasn’t something he was totally expecting, and told his agent to call the crew back after the agent rejected it, thinking Cera didn’t want to travel to London. Now, he did stress that all the agent really did was taper their expectations that he might not want the role.

He managed to get a hold of Greta Gerwig’s email, and the two set up a Zoom after he asked if he could talk about the part.

Of course, Cera did end up at the forefront of the cast alongside Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, plus a fellow supporting cast like Will Ferrell. Previously, the actor had expressed why he enjoyed the role so much.

With the success of Barbie, a lot of eyes are on Mattel’s next blockbuster, but we’ll have to wait and see if whatever they can cook up will have nearly the same impact as its billion-dollar toy adaptation here.
