The Marvels director knows superhero fatigue exists

August 13, 2023

Despite the mixed reception it received from fans, Marvel is looking to the future with a sequel of sorts in The Marvels. Leading this film is newcomer to the superhero genre, Nia DeCosta, known for her 2021 slasher film, Candyman.

Speaking with Total Film, DeCosta believes superhero fatigue exists and aims to combat it and make herself stand out in the space. She’s doing this by making the film more wacky and silly than the rest of the superhero lineup.

“I think superhero fatigue absolutely exists …The biggest difference from the other MCU movies to date is that it’s really wacky, and silly. The worlds we go to in this movie are worlds unlike others you’ve seen in the MCU. Bright worlds that you haven’t seen before.”

Plenty of people have been denoting superhero fatigue, especially within the last few years, thanks to the numerous superhero flick flops. Of course, not everyone shares this belief. Phil Lord and Chris Miller notably denounce superhero fatigue and more associate films flopping due to each title feeling too similar to Rolling Stone. While this could be the case, even when you’re offered a variety of the same thing, fatigue does start to set in.

The Marvels has a more targeted experience with a trio of specific heroes. We’ll have to wait and see just how much DeCosta’s superhero debut will stand out, but we expect it’ll be an uphill battle to claw its way to the top nonetheless.

The superhero flick hits theaters later this year on November 10.
