James Gunn’s swan song out of Marvel, as he leaped into an executive role at DC Studios, was not a small one. He brought us Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Since debuting on Disney+ in early August, it seems a lot of people want to catch up with Starkiller and co.
A recent Neilson report (via Comicbook) showcases that the hero flick debuted as a top movie on the platform. Overall, it was beaten out by TV shows like Netflix streaming The Lincoln Lawyer or Suits, which streams on both Netflix and Peacock. However, in terms of movies, it’s #1, beating out The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Happiness For Beginners, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, They Cloned Tyrone, Miraculous: Ladybug & Cat Noir, the Movie, and more.
It’s even crazier considering how much more GotG Vol. 3 got compared to the second-place film. 1,625 million minutes compared to 717 million. Now, we can’t just deny that the films have different runtimes, with the threequel clocking in at two and half hours while the Mario movie lands squarely behind that at 1.5 hours, but still.
It certainly feels like a fitting end to James Gunn’s association with Marvel, considering this franchise has become what he’s mostly known for to a good portion of Marvel fans, and it seems fitting that it’s taken the top spot of streamed movies as a whole.
